Guidelines
The Scholarship
1. The Scholarship will be called the Ernest Prete, Jr. Geological Sciences
Scholarship at Cal Poly Pomona.
2. Each Scholarship will be a $1,000 sum awarded annually at the Cal Poly
Pomona Geological Sciences Department Alumni Reception. Generally, this
is a picnic held in April.
3. The Geological Sciences Department encourages Mr. Prete or a representative
of the Ernest Prete, Jr. Foundation to be present to make the award. This
gives students a better opportunity to understand Mr. Prete's commitment
to the environment and the personal interest Mr. Prete has for students,
"hands-on" learning, and concerns for the preservation of our
planet.
4. A plaque briefly describing the purpose of the award, and listing the
names of all recipients will be placed in a prominent position within
the Geological Sciences Department Office.
Selection of Recipients
1. Although the goal is to give one scholarship every year, the overriding
intention is to recognize individuals with outstanding commitments to
the field of Earth Sciences with emphasis in environmental studies or
planetology. To this end, there is no stipulated requirement that only
one scholarship be awarded each year. When funds from earnings on the
endowed fund allow, more than one scholarship may be awarded.
2. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who demonstrates academic
excellence and commitment to the study and understanding of Earth Sciences
with emphasis in environmental studies or planetology. Its purpose is
three-fold. It will recognize academic excellence, recognize the value
of "hands-on" learning opportunities through the senior research
thesis, and recognize the importance of protecting our environment through
a thorough understanding of the Earth's natural physical processes and
their complex of environmental inter-relationships.
3. To qualify for the scholarship an applicant must be classified as a
senior or a graduate student during the academic year following the presentation.
Thus, students must have a minimum of 135 quarter units, or its equivalent
of university credit. Only students in good academic standing with the
University will be considered in the pool of eligible persons. Eligible
persons must have been enrolled in one of Cal Poly Pomona Geological Sciences
Department's degree programs or a period of not less than one calendar
year prior to being declared eligible and have sufficient course-related
obligations to be in residence one year after receipt of the award.
4. During the Fall Quarter, the Geological Sciences Department will post
a list of candidates eligible for the award.
5. Candidates must request consideration for the Scholarship. Candidates
may self nominate or be nominated by their peers or faculty. The deadline
date for receipt of candidates' letters of interest will be as close as
possible to one month prior to the meeting date of the Scholarship Board
of Directors.
6. The following must be submitted to the Scholarship Board of Directors
for consideration: (a) a proposal for the senior thesis outlining the
purpose or goals of the study and how it will improve, forward, or better
our understanding of the physical environment; (b) a timeline and budget;
(c) a brief description of personal ideas and career goals; and (d) a
copy of college transcripts.
7. Applicants will be invited for a personal interview. This brief interview
will be conducted during the annual Board of Directors meeting, and will
serve as a means to establish commonalties between the applicant, the
senior thesis proposal, and stated ideals and career goals. It is the
intent of the Board to conduct this interview in a casual, informal, non-confrontational,
conversation with the applicant.
8. After evaluation of all applications and interviews, the Directors
must agree on a single successful individual by unanimous vote.
9. Although the goal is to give one scholarship per year, the overriding
intention is to recognize individuals with outstanding commitments to
the field of earth sciences. To this end, there is no stipulated requirement
that only one scholarship is awarded each year. When funds from earning
on the endowed fund allow, more than one scholarship may be awarded.

Board of Directors (Scholarship Board of Directors) will be fixed at three

its representative.
