Professional Development Courses

As part of a large-scale research study funded by the National Science Foundation and the San Gabriel Valley Science Project, we are offering a 5-year professional development program for 7th and 8th grade science and/or math teachers. The program features best practices in professional development and is designed to help you:

Deepen your understanding of core science and/or math concepts.
Examine how students make sense of those concepts and commonly misunderstand them.
Analyze and improve your teaching.
Deepen your understanding and experience with coaching new teachers.

Video Cases

The program focuses on core science and math concepts in the context of video cases. You and your colleagues will watch, analyze and discuss video cases taught by veteran classroom teachers, examine student work and critically analyze classic instructional activities and decisions.

Language and Literacy

Language and literacy program components help you and your colleageues unpack the academic language of science and math to effectively support students' discourse and language development, particularly that of English learners.

Preliminary studies show that this professional development program positively impacts both teacher knowledge and student achievement. (Roth, et al, 2010)
