SCI-FILES network storage has several advantages:
1) Robust Backup System - so you don't have to worry about it!
2) Easy to recover files using "Previous Copies" - a very handy feature!
3) Reliability - server has fault-tolerant disks (RAID5 with a hot-spare)
4) Physical Security - server is in a locked, access-controlled room
5) Availability - you can get to your files from on- and off-campus
6) Large storage quota - 10GB/user

Windows:
Example: \\sci-files.win.csupomona.edu\mat\fac\mlgreen
Example: smb://sci-files.win.csupomona.edu/chm/fac/laalex
Note that Windows uses the backslash (\) and Mac OSX uses the forward slash (/).
No, sci-files is a file server, not a web server. CPP Intranet file storage is still in use by many folks, esp. for their web pages. If you maintain a web site on Intranet, continue to use this resource. CPP Intranet provides file storage space, ~50-500MB for most users.
For many folks, we are re-directing your "My Documents" to your Z: drive on your PC. That way, everything in "My Documents" is actually on your Z: drive and will already be backed-up daily. This is typically done for faculty Windows laptops. In this case, we are also enabling "offline files" which stores a local copy on your hard disk so you can still get to files when disconnected from Cal Poly network.
Cal Poly eHelp offers instructions for changing passwords at https://win.webdev.csupomona.edu/idm/ or call I&IT Helpdesk at 869-6776.
Make sure you are using your correct Bronco username and password. If you have forgotten your password, see above.
Your network file share is set up to automatically login to PC's or Mac's joined to the WIN domain using your WIN account credentials. If PC or Mac is not on the WIN domain, you will have to explicitly authenticate as a WIN account user. If you are using a PC, put a "win\" in front of your username, e.g. win\bvnorum
To connect to a file share from a PC outside of the WIN domain, view the PC Instructions.
We may have missed you. To have a share created, contact the Science Helpdesk in 8-51, call 869-3928, or put in an IT Support Request.
No, sci-files is not an FTP or SSH login server (like login.csupomona.edu). To access your storage space, you must mount your file share.
10GB is an initial quota, but we are happy to accomodate most folks' data storage needs.
VPN means Virtual Private Network. To connect to on-campus resources (Exchange, e-mail clients, and sci-files file share, etc.) from off-campus, one needs to establish a VPN connection. VPN allows your internet connection to “tunnel” through Cal Poly’s firewall at perimeter of campus. VPN uses your network password which is different from your e-mail password. More VPN information.
