Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I use sci-files?

Sci-files network storage has several advantages:

1) Backed up nightly by College staff, so you don't have to worry about it!
2) Users can restore their own files using "Previous Copies" - a very handy feature!
3) Science is providing ample space, 2.5GB/user, and will work with you on your data storage needs.
4) Physical security (server is in a locked, access-controlled room).
5) Availability (you can get to your files by logging in at other computers and from off-campus).
6) Server has fault-tolerant disks (Raid5) and is monitored daily.

I would like to automatically map my file share on my PC, Mac, or other PC's I use

To make this happen, we typically join your PC or Mac to the WIN domain on campus. Then, you will use your CPP username and password to login. For PC's, we set your home directory as Z: drive and map this to your file share. That way, if you login to other WIN domain PC's in the College or on campus, your Z: drive will map and you'll have access to all your files. Please contact your dept tech or Brent Norum, x4560, for more info.

How do I join my PC or Mac to the WIN domain and setup my file share to automatically mount?

We are encouraging this for users so their files are backed-up! This is not a do-it-yourself project. Please contact your dept tech or Brent Norum, x4560.

How can I tell if my PC is joined to WIN domain?

When you get the login screen, the 3rd line will say "WIN." If there isn't a 3rd line, click "Options." If WIN is not an option, then PC has not been joined to WIN domain. Please contact your dept tech or Brent Norum, x4560.

Is sci-files a web server like my Intranet space?

No, sci-files is a file server, not a web server. CPP Intranet file storage is still in use by many folks, esp. for their web pages. If you maintain a web site on Intranet, continue to use this resource. CPP Intranet provides limited file storage space, ~50-100MB for most users.

My (Intranet) files are gone! My Z: drive is empty. Where are my web pages and other files?

Your Intranet files are still in your Intranet file share. Please re-map your Intranet file share (\\files.csupomona.edu\yourusername) to a different drive letter, like W: drive. Your WIN domain login home directory may be re-directed to your new sci-files personal file share as Z: drive. Previously, your Intranet file share may have been your home directory (Z:).

How can I backup "My Documents" on my PC or laptop?

For many folks, we are re-directing your "My Documents" to your Z: drive on your PC. That way, everything in "My Documents" is actually on your Z: drive and will already be backed-up daily. This is typically done for faculty Windows laptops. In this case, we are also enabling "offline files" which stores a local copy on your hard disk so you can still get to files when disconnected from Cal Poly network. This can also be done for Windows desktops.

If this is not setup for you, and you would like this option, please contact your dept tech or Brent Norum, x4560.

How do I change my password?

The Cal Poly eHelp offers instructions for changing passwords at http://www.csupomona.edu/~ehelp/idm/pw.html or x6776.

What do I do if the server says “Wrong Password”?

Make sure you are using your correct e-mail username and password. If you have forgotten your password, see above or contact the eHelp desk, x6776.

I know my e-mail username and password are correct, but I still can't login to my share.

Your network file share is set up to automatically login to PC's or Mac's joined to the WIN domain using your WIN account credentials. If PC or Mac is not on the WIN domain, you will have to explicitly authenticate as a WIN account user. To connect to a file share from a PC outside of the WIN domain, view the non-WIN domain instructions.

My username is not listed under my department file share.

We may have missed you. To have a share created,.contact Brent Norum, x4560.

Can I FTP or SSH (Telnet) to my file share as I can with the Intranet?

No, sci-files is not an FTP or SSH login server (like login.csupomona.edu). To access your storage space, you must mount your file share.

The server responds with an “Exceeded Disk Quota” warning?

Your initial quota is 2.5 GB, to increase your quota contact Brent Norum, x4560.

2.5GB is not enough space for me!

2.5 GB is an initial quota, but I am happy to accomodate most folks data storage needs. Please contact Brent Norum, x4560.

How secure is the file server?

The file server is as secure as your email password. These are some basic guidelines to ensuring a more secure password:

1) Use at least 8 characters (more is even better)
2) Include at least 1 number
3) Mix uppercase and lowercase letters
4) Avoid using words found in the dictionary

What is VPN? And what password does it use?

VPN means Virtual Private Network. To connect to on-campus resources (Exchange, e-mail clients, and sci-files file share, etc.) from off-campus, one needs to connect via VPN. VPN allows your internet connection to “tunnel” through Cal Poly’s firewall at perimeter of campus. VPN uses your network password which is different from your e-mail password. More VPN information.
