College of Science, Cal Poly PomonaThe College of Science is providing a dedicated file server for staff and faculty file storage. The file server is accessible to both PCs running Windows 2000/XP and Macs running OS X. A personal file storage account with an initial limit of 2.5 GB will be created for each faculty and staff member within the college. This account is accessed using WIN domain credentials (CPP e-mail username and password). This server is accessible from off-campus via VPN and is backed up nightly and backup media is rotated offsite for disaster recovery. Personal network file storage has the advantages of physical security (server is in a locked, access-controlled room), availability (you can get to your files by logging in at other computers), and ease of recovery (easy to restore files from server) over local hard disk storage that is susceptible to hardware failure (disk crash), physical theft, is likely not backed up regularly, and is not available from off-campus or at other login points in campus.
