Email programs need to be configured for SSL by May 28, 2008
As part of making Cal Poly network communications more secure for users, campus email server settings were modified (insecure ports were shut down) on May 28, 2008.
What does this mean? Your email program needs to be setup to use secure (SSL) protocols, if it is not already, or you may not be able to receive email after May 28, 2008. Webmail or Outlook Web Access (OWA) is unaffected by this change.
Securing your E-mail client
Webmail (https://exchange.csupomona.edu) -- If you use webmail, there is no need to configure anything. It is already using a secure connection via your web browser. Webmail is also a a quick way to check email if you are unable to update your email program by cutoff date.
All POP and IMAP email programs need to be configured to use the SSL protocol (and ports) for incoming and outgoing email. In many cases, selecting the "SSL" option and correct secure port for the protocol you use is all that is needed to make your program secure.
Secure Ports:
- SSL POP Incoming = 995
- SSL IMAP Incoming = 993
- SSL SMTP Outgoing = 465
Outlook 2003 in Exchange Mode (Nothing needs to be done if using Exchange mode. However, if you use Outlook in POP or IMAP modes, you still need to setup SSL.)
Client Setup Instruction Guides: (Mac Mail, Entourage, Outlook)

Note:
These are complete set up guides for setting up NEW accounts on specific programs (clients). DO NOT setup a new account if you are already using the email client! You only need to change to the SSL ports above. Refer to appropriate sections in these guides (near end of setup steps).
Trouble sending email from home or off-campus?
- Use Authenticated SMTP with Network password. CPP is moving toward Auth SMTP for all internal networks by December 2008.
- POP/IMAP: Make sure you are using authenticated SMTP on port 465 (SSL) for outgoing mail off-campus, which uses your Bronco name and Network password (this IS NOT your Bronco password!). If you don't know your Network password, you need to change it at My Control Panel, then retry authenticated SMTP.
- Outlook Exchange: Make sure your VPN connection is setup and established before connecting with Outlook.
- Some clients don't seem to connect well from off-campus and may work better with VPN established.
Eudora users should change to another client, such as Outlook Exchange (PC), or Mac Mail or Entourage (Mac), as Eudora is no longer a supported product, and use of unsupported computer applications is inherently insecure. Please contact Science Helpdesk if you need help migrating to another email product.
