Science Solutions

[image of community group] Communities face lots of problems. Often the only time these problems get solved is when a community group becomes actively involved in the solution. However, active involvement is not easy. Cities and corporations have access to a wealth of technical information which is not readily available to the ordinary citizens. Unfortunately, the solution selected by the community frequently depends on this technical information.

A Science Solutions is one way for California State Polytechnic University, Pomona to provide community groups with this technical information. It is part of our efforts for university students to give back something to the community which pays for the greater part of their education. Here is how the Science Solutions works.

  • A concerned community group submits a request for help on their technical problem.
  • The university faculty study the request to assure that the information requested can be provided in a reasonable time.
  • A student near graduation from university takes on the project and talks with the group to fully appreciate their concerns.
  • The student then locates the needed technical information and converts it into a form that can be used by the community group.
  • A faculty member monitors the student's work to insure its accuracy and completeness.
  • The student writes a full report which explains the requested technical information as it relates to the problem.
  • The student then presents this report to the community group and answers the group's questions.

Since students have to fit this work around their other studies, the technical reports are not generated as fast as we might wish. However, the price is right, and the information is tailored to the community's needs. By participating in the solution, the student has learned to deal with a real community problem instead of text book questions. In this way everybody comes away from a Science Solutions project with something valuable.
